The Bavarian's magnificent log mansion is fashioned after the high Alpine guest houses, or Ski Alms, of Austria and Bavaria. It is veritably secluded and bears the character and feeling of a private Alpine retreat appointed with Old-World opulence. The perfect complement to Taos Ski Valley's magical, European style.

The Bavarian is the only ski-in, ski-out lodge located mid-mountain, just yards from the base of the Kachina Quad chairlift, to which our guests have exclusive access during the early portion of the morning.

Summer activities include guided nature excursions, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and fishing.

From The Bavarian, our guests can take self-guided nature tours of the bordering wilderness area, into the unique Williams Lake Glacial Canyon.

The Schulze family came from the highest peaks in Bavaria to the highest peaks in New Mexico, bringing with them Old World opulence, high-quality service and an artistic attention to detail.

Heading east from the historic downtown Taos Plaza, a weary traveler comes upon the enchanting Inn on the Rio. Located on the Rio Fernando at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Inn has recently gone through a wonderful rebirth. Innkeepers Robert and Julie Cahalane, left the corporate rat race back in Boston and took on the monumental task of bringing a former landmark back into its glory.

Julie, with a masters degree in nutrition, knew she could satisfy her guests hunger for healthy southwest treats. Robert, a retired marketing executive with an extensive finance and economic background, knew he could make the numbers work. But, what about the declining physical structures? New friends and neighbors, happy to see the interest and enormous dedication by the new innkeepers, offered their knowledge. Armed with the information and "several good pairs of work gloves" the couple began the monumental task.

One highlight of the renovation is an outdoor in-ground hot tub in a secluded area with a spectacular view of Taos Mountain during the day and the star studded deep navy blue sky at night. What better way to relax after a day filled with a myriad of activities. Others include rooms decorated in "Cowboy Casual" and "Pueblo Picturesque"; all with blankets, rugs, art and artifacts collected from all over New Mexico. Julie created the perfect outdoor southwest scenes with many flower beds filled with Hollyhocks, Mexican Hats and other native plants. Scattered among the flowers are some of Julie's favorite antique watering cans and garden tools collected from all over the country.

"A lot of blood sweat and tears went into this project", comments Julie. "I couldn't believe how much we accomplished in such a short amount of time", adds Robert. The "Icing on the cake" has been recent visits by southwest artists who spent several weeks painting murals on the exterior walls, arches over the doorways and with painstaking detail the interiors, most notable each bathroom with its own theme.

And throughout the renovation the innkeepers were never too busy to take the time to visit with their guests. Often, in front of the historic Carmen Velarde Kiva fireplace in the inn's cozy gathering room, Julie offers a wide variety of choices for shopping, dining and sightseeing. Robert, an outdoor enthusiast, reveals the best kept secrets of the great outdoors: close-by hiking, mountain biking and challenging skiing. Together, Julie and Robert guarantee the perfect Taos getaway.
